NoteFront: notes you own, with an AI that moves your ideas forward
Overview
Two things kept bothering me.
- My notes were not really mine. They lived on a big company’s servers, and that company could read and use them whenever it wanted.
- My ideas were getting buried. Like a lot of creative people, I write down ideas, stories and solutions all the time. Most of them sit in a notes app and are never looked at again, never evaluated, never built.
I wanted my notes on hardware I control, and something working on them around the clock: asking me questions, filling in the gaps, and telling me when an idea is ready to become real.
Key Features
The design
Three layers, and each one is a choice:
- Private notes, by default. Your notes sync securely between your devices through your own server. When NoteFront sets that server up, it locks it so only you can get in. Not even NoteFront keeps access. Nothing else happens unless you ask.
- An AI that works on your notes, if you want it. With one explicit command you install an AI agent on your server. It reads each note and does one of three things: asks you a question, writes a fuller version beside your original, or marks the idea as ready to build. Your originals are never changed.
- From idea to project. Connect your code hosting, and ideas that are ready can move on to being built.
What it’s like to use
I write a half-formed idea on my phone at night. By morning there’s a short set of questions waiting for me, answerable in one line each. I reply from wherever I am. On the next pass the AI turns the note and my answers into a proper write-up. When I’m happy with it, I type ready, and it’s handed off to be built.
Impact
I’ve been running this on my own notes: my laptop, my phone and my own server stay in sync, and an AI agent iterates on my notes and asks me questions between passes. This post started as one of those notes.
